PowerHousing Australia has welcomed the Albanese Government’s landmark housing package, praising the 100,000-home program as a vital boost to supply — and a major opportunity to deliver more affordable and social housing for Australians doing it tough in the current crisis.
“This is a strong step forward,” said PowerHousing Australia Acting CEO Alex Raphael. “We commend the government’s recognition that boosting supply is essential, and their commitment to ensuring social and affordable rental homes are part of the solution.”
The Government’s $10 billion initiative, announced as part of the broader $43 billion Homes for Australia Plan, aims to deliver 100,000 new homes for first home buyers — including unlocking social and affordable housing opportunities on government and council-owned land.
PowerHousing members — which include some of the Australia’s largest and most capable Community Housing Providers —are ready to partner with governments at all levels to turn these opportunities into real homes for people in need.
“This is an opportunity to build not just houses, but communities,” said Alex Raphael.
“If we’re using public land to support first home buyers, we must also ensure there is a place for essential workers and renters who’ve been priced out of the market. Our sector is ready to help deliver that balance.”
The announcement builds on the existing pipeline of 28,000 social and affordable homes already underway — part of the 55,000-home commitment under the Homes for Australia Plan.
“Affordability pressures won’t disappear overnight,” Alex Raphael said. “But with the right investment, strong partnerships, and a clear focus on delivering the right mix of housing — we can move the dial.”
PowerHousing is calling for rapid collaboration with community housing providers to make the most of this opportunity — with an emphasis on leveraging public land, innovative financing models, and long-term planning to ensure affordability is locked in for future generations.
