PowerHousing Australia is delighted to share our report titled Housing for All: Leveraging Community Housing to Address Australia’s Crisis, which underscores the urgent need to expand social and affordable housing to tackle the nation’s deepening housing crisis.
We applaud Federal Government for their current initiatives, however Australia’s housing affordability crisis is worsening, with homelessness on the rise and skyrocketing rents locking out low- to middle-income earners.
PowerHousing Australia CEO, Michelle Gegenhuber believes that “Community Housing Providers are uniquely positioned to build up to the delivery of 20,000 new social and affordable homes annually, aiming for 1 in every 10 homes in Australia to be social or affordable by 2045.”
The report calls for a federal bipartisan commitment to policies that fully harness the potential of Community Housing Providers to address Australia’s housing shortfall.
Recommendations include:
- Commitment to a 20-year Housing Plan to ensure 1 in 10 homes in Australia are social or affordable by 2045.
- Expansion of government programs and funding, including a targeted increase in the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF).
- Recognition of social and affordable housing as essential social infrastructure, unlocking private sector investment and accelerating project delivery.
Gegenhuber states, “Community Housing Providers are ready to build homes to address Australia’s housing crisis. With the right policy settings and support, our members can deliver large-scale housing solutions that not only provide stability for vulnerable Australians but also bolster economic productivity, employment and community cohesion.”
The report will be officially launched at the PowerHousing Member Exchange Conference 2024.
